TriboMeca® Turbocharger and cold start: the tribological solution

The turbocharger is one of the most stressed and fragile components in a modern engine. Capable of spinning at over 200,000 rpm, it operates under extreme temperature and speed conditions. Yet, the majority of its failures are not caused by overstress, but by a subtle and recurring phenomenon: momentary lack of lubrication.
And that is precisely where TriboMeca® comes in.
Why the turbo is particularly vulnerable
The turbocharger relies on a shaft supported by bearings (often floating bearings) lubricated by engine oil. These bearings must maintain an extremely thin oil film to prevent any metal-to-metal contact at very high speeds.
However, two critical situations endanger this film:
- Cold starting At startup, the oil is still in the crankcase. It is viscous and takes several seconds (sometimes more than 10 seconds in extreme cold) to reach the turbo bearings. During this time, the turbo shaft is already starting to spin... without optimal protection.
- Hot shutdown After sustained driving, the turbo remains very hot. If the engine is shut off abruptly, the oil that stagnates in the central body can carbonize (coking), gradually obstructing the lubrication channels.
These two phenomena, repeated thousands of times, are responsible for a large part of premature turbo wear: bearing scratches, material transfer, shaft imbalance, and then failure.
The real enemy: metal-to-metal contact
When the oil film has not yet formed or breaks down, the metal surfaces of the bearings and the shaft come into direct contact. At 150,000 or 200,000 rpm, even a few seconds of dry friction are enough to generate significant wear.
It is exactly the same mechanism observed on engine bearings during a cold start... but amplified by the turbo's extreme rotational speed.
How TriboMeca® protects the turbocharger
TriboMeca® is not an additive. It is a nanostructured tribofilm technology that acts as a third interface between the metal surfaces.
Once applied to the engine oil, it forms an ultra-thin protective film (on the order of a few dozen nanometers) that:
- Is already active before the oil has fully circulated
- Provides immediate protection during a cold start
- Significantly reduces bearing friction and wear
- Resists extreme temperatures
- Continuously self-regenerates
- Does not alter the original oil characteristics
Result: even during the phases where the conventional oil film is still insufficient, the turbo's critical surfaces remain protected.
Concrete benefits for the turbo
- Reduced bearing and shaft wear
- Instant lubrication during cold starts
- Reduced risk of coking related to excessive friction
- Maintenance of turbo performance over a longer period
- Contribution to the overall longevity of the engine
Compatible with all oils (mineral, semi-synthetic, and synthetic), TriboMeca® fully preserves manufacturer warranties.
Conclusion
The turbocharger is a masterpiece of precision... but also a weak point if lubrication is not optimal from the very first seconds. By acting precisely where the oil takes time to arrive, TriboMeca® provides essential complementary protection.
Protecting the turbo means protecting one of the most expensive and critical components of your engine.
